Description

This is an early 18th-century house, now used as offices. It is constructed of brown brick with red brick detailing, and has a concrete and tiled roof. The house has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, and stands on a plinth. It features a moulded eaves cornice with Dutch-shaped gables, three flat-roofed dormers, and chimney stacks to the left and right. The regular fenestration includes five glazing bar sashes with fielded aprons on the first floor, and four glazing bar sashes with gauged heads on the ground floor. There are basement openings at the centre left and centre right. The central front door consists of six raised and fielded panels, with a moulded step and footscraper set within a doorcase featuring fluted pilasters and a projecting moulded architrave. The doorcase has a fluted frieze with brackets supporting a moulded and projecting cornice. There's a recessed wing to the left with its own door of six raised and fielded panels. The interior is reported to contain marble Neo-classical fireplaces, a contemporary staircase, and panelling. In 1802, the house was the residence of Nathaniel Austen, a shipping agent, ropemaker, and banker. Cannon Road, located nearby, was a ropewalk in both 1735 and 1822.
