Description
The Old House, located at 125 High Street in Ramsgate, is an early 18th-century house featuring brown brick with red brick details and a plain tiled roof. It has two storeys and an attic with a basement, all set on a plinth. The roof has a moulded wooden eaves cornice, pedimented Dutch gables, two flat-roofed dormers, and chimney stacks at the rear left and right. The front has a regular arrangement of four glazing bar sash windows on each floor, all with gauged red brick heads, grouped in pairs around a central door. The door has six raised and fielded panels, with the top two being glazed. It is framed by a doorcase with fluted Doric pilasters, a triglyph frieze, and a modillioned pediment, along with two moulded steps. There are basement openings on both sides of the door.
Inside, the house retains panelled interiors on both the ground and first floors, featuring generally plain beaded panelling in the entrance hall and the left-hand room, which includes a marble fireplace and round-headed recesses on either side. The upper rooms also have similar panelling. The right-hand ground floor room is finished with panelled wainscot, a dado rail, and raised and fielded panels on the shutters and door. It features a bolection moulded fireplace with a panelled overmantel and domed fitted cupboards on either side. The staircase is top-lit and is a later infill replacing the original newel stair.
The property also includes a walled forecourt, which has five-foot-high brick walls extending from the house to rendered piers with caps, along with a low rendered front wall that now has late 20th-century breeze block courses added on top. At the time of the survey, the house was heavily covered in scaffolding.
