Description
No. 144 High Street is a house that has been converted into shops and flats. It dates from the early 18th century and was altered in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of yellow brick with red brick dressings and has rendered side elevations. It stands three storeys tall, originally designed as two storeys, and features a modillion eaves cornice now at the second floor, topped with a parapet. The second floor has three sash windows, while the first floor has five segmentally headed glazing bar sashes with gauged red brick segmental surrounds. There are plate glass shop fronts on both the left and right sides, with recessed glazed doors in the centre left and centre right, and an overall fascia supported by pilaster strips. The central entrance has recessed double half-glazed doors with round heads. Inside, there is a geometric staircase with a wreathed and moulded handrail on an open string, complemented by simple balusters. The building is marked on the Collard and Hurst map from 1822 and is likely shown on a plan of Ramsgate from 1735.
