Description

The Royal Sailors Rest is a hotel, now commercial premises, built in 1904. Constructed of red brick with faience tiles and a slate roof, it is four storeys high with an attic. The ground floor features rusticated quoins and a cornice, with four three-storey panelled pilasters incorporating freely-treated capitals. A frieze displays the words "Royal Sailors Rest." A dentil cornice runs along the roof, punctuated by pinnacles on the left and right, an arcaded parapet with leaded semi-dormers in the same locations, and a central scrolled and shaped gable. This gable has a bullseye window above two keyed round-headed openings containing sashes. Corniced stacks are situated on the left and right. The third and second floors have four French windows, square-headed on the left and right and round-headed in the centre, all with moulded faience surrounds and balconies. The first floor features six round-headed French windows within keyed round-headed surrounds, accompanied by a continuous balcony. A 20th-century plate glass shop front occupies the ground floor, featuring a panelled door to the left, a half-glazed door centrally, and double half-glazed doors to the right. The building was erected in 1904 by the Royal British and Foreign Sailors' Society as a hostel for sailors, and was later used as a hotel.
