Description

Monkton Court is a former monastic grange that has been converted into a house. It dates back to the 15th century and was rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of flint with freestone and red brick dressings, and it has been extended with red and brown brick. The roof is plain tiled. The structure has two storeys and an attic, featuring an oversailing gable end to the centre left, one hipped dormer, and stacks to the left and rear right.

On the first floor, there are three segmental headed glazing bar sash windows, while the ground floor has two tripartite glazing bar sash windows and a large central projecting 20th-century porch with a boarded door and sidelights. The left side of the building shows flint walls that rise into the gable end. There are 18th and 19th-century additions at the rear. The flintwork, which is at least three feet thick, and the stone quoins are remnants of work done by either Prior Selling around 1480 or Prior Goldstone around 1500. Until the late 19th century, the building featured stone mullioned windows. Extensive stone and timber ranges were destroyed in the late 19th century, although some cellars and footings still remain. No interior details are preserved. This site was once the grange and occasional retreat for the monks of Canterbury Cathedral, serving as the central manor for the part of Thanet that was not managed from the Abbey of St. Augustine's grange at Minster.
