Description
The Royal Exchange is a house that was formerly an inn, built in the early 18th century and later refenestrated in the 20th century. It features painted brickwork, partly in English bond, with a pegtiled roof and end brick chimney stacks. The building is a two-way end chimney-stack house with one storey and attics, and it has two windows. The gable ends are supported by kneelers, and there are two hipped dormers with casement windows. The ground floor windows are modern metal-framed casements. A cross-shaped iron tie is present, and there is a central doorcase with a moulded architrave leading to a modern two-panelled studded door. To the right side, there is a set-back 19th-century extension that is one storey high, built of paved brick with a roof now covered in corrugated iron. The rear has a catslide roof. The Royal Exchange served as an inn until 1876 and was also a staging post for horse-drawn coaches.
