Description
The chest tomb and three headstones are located about 10-20 metres north of the chancel of the Church of St. Laurence. The chest tomb, which is railed, is dedicated to Mary Sandilands, who died in 1817. It features a double stepped base with a moulded plinth, trefoil headed corner piers, and an oval plaque set against a reeded background. The top slab is moulded and incised. The tomb is surrounded by spear head rails.
One headstone commemorates Francis Coxen, who died in 1704. It stands about 2.5 feet high and displays a full relief of a winged cherub's head, accompanied by foliate scrolls. Another headstone belongs to Martha Knowler, dating from the early 18th century, and is approximately 1.5 feet high. It has a scroll-shaped head and features two incised panels with crossed bones (which are damaged) and an hourglass. The third headstone is for Stephen Hooper, who died in 1744. This headstone is also about 2.5 feet high and showcases foliated scrolled shoulders, a raised segmental outline, and an anchor on a shield.
