Description

This is a group of 11 brick chest tombs located to the south of the chancel of the Church of St. Laurence. They include the tomb of Pettit Gold, who died in 1801, and his family. The tombs are built into the footpath wall and feature simple top slabs. The inscription on Pettit Gold's tomb still shows traces of its original gold paint, which plays on the family name. Nearby is the tomb of Robert Ticknor, who died in 1711, which has a moulded stone top slab inscribed with motifs of a Death's head and palm frond. The other chest tombs vary in size and height, featuring inscriptions that are often difficult to read, and are topped with either moulded stone slabs or heavy crude marble slabs, all dating from the mid-18th century.
