Description

This is a terrace of three houses dating from 1826 to 1836, built as part of James Townley's redevelopment of the cavalry barracks site, and designed alongside numbers 11-17 and 4-44, predating Spencer Square. The construction is primarily painted brick, with number 9 having pebbledash and a rendered base. The slate roof has four dormers and three chimney stacks, positioned left, centre left, and centre right.

The houses are three storeys high, with a basement and attic. They feature a rusticated base and string courses to the first and second floors. A cornice parapet is topped with Ionic pilasters. The upper floors have four glazing bar sashes, with two central sashes on the second floor. The first floor features six margin light French doors with rectangular fanlights and tented verandahs supported by trellised piers and simple rails; the verandah at number 9 is glazed in tripartite bows. The ground floor has sashes and pilasters, and panelled doors with semi-circular fanlights to the right of each panel. The basement has sashes and half-glazed doors. Fleur-de-lys rails define the steps, basement areas and front gardens.
