Description
This is a pair of houses dating to around 1820, located on Royal Road, Ramsgate. The houses are rendered and have a slate roof. They are three storeys high, with an additional basement and attic, and feature string courses marking the first floor level, and Ionic pilasters to the cornice parapet. There are three dormers, and a central chimney stack. The windows are largely glazing bar sashes, with two sashes to each of the second and first floors. Canted bay windows are present in the basement and on the ground floor, with French windows. Number 3 has a late 19th-century wooden verandah, incorporating early 19th-century Gothick pattern rails. The houses have boarded doors at each end, each with a flight of five steps and simple railings. The house pair appear on Collard and Hurst’s plan of Ramsgate from 1821. The stucco details – including the cill bands, Ionic pilasters, and moulded cornice – were likely added around 1836 as part of a development that gave the entire Royal Road a consistent appearance, shared with neighboring buildings.
