Description

Two free standing wall monuments and a headstone with a barrel tomb are located about 45 metres north-west of the Church of St. Laurence. The wall monuments and headstone commemorate Thomas Elgar, who died in 1851. The first monument is a free standing aedicule made of rendered masonry, standing about 8 feet high. It features panelled pilasters and an open pediment with a demi-angel on a foliate bracket, along with a panel below that has a moulded architrave. Approximately 10 metres to the west, there is a 6 feet high rendered brick wall that has a cornice shaped like a pediment and a wall plaque that is now illegible, with the apron missing. About 5 metres north of the Elgar tomb is a headstone for William Shottewoode, who died in 1806. This headstone is about 4 feet high and has a heart-shaped recess carved with an eagle on a rock, a sun to the left, and a motto to the right. The barrel tomb is attached to this headstone.
