Description
A pair of houses, Brenan House (No. 21) and Mendleshan House (No. 22), were built in the 1840s and extended in the mid-19th century as part of J.C. Eddel's development of Ramsgate Vale Square. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with some painted areas, and have a slate roof. They are three storeys and an attic, over a basement, with four pilaster strips and a hipped roof with overhanging eaves. A central stack and two dormers are present.
The front elevation of Mendleshan House (to the left) has two sashes with vertical glazing bars on the ground floor, two further sash windows with vertical glazing bars to the basement, and two French windows on the first floor, the one to the right featuring shutters. A verandah is supported by iron brackets and has trellised piers and decorative, Gothic-style panelled cast iron railings. An oriel window is set into the left return. To the right, a two-storey extension (Brenan House/No. 21) features pilaster strips, a stack at the end of the right side, and irregular fenestration with four sashes. A boarded door, with a sash-fanlight above, is positioned in the centre of the extension. Entry to Mendleshan House is provided by a double-panelled door within a two-storey porch on the left return, preceded by five moulded steps, with a later 20th-century porch at a lower level.
