Description

The Lazarus Hart Havens of Rest are a group of alms houses built between 1917 and 1922. They are constructed of red brick with a timber frame and have a plain tiled roof. The design features two pedimented Dutch gables made of brick, which have diaper blocks in the center. Between and on either side of these gables are two-storey timber-framed sections, along with single-storey brick hipped end wings. There are tall lozenge-set moulded stacks on both the left and right sides. The buildings have leaded lights on both floors, with five bays in total, and eaves on the ground floor. The entrances are through boarded doors located in recessed porches, with turned baluster stairs leading to the upper storeys. The names of the houses are displayed on stone plaques on the pedimented blocks. The alms houses were founded by a legacy from Lazarus Hart, who was Ramsgate's first Jewish mayor, with £10,000 allocated for homes to be shared by both Jews and Gentiles.
