RAMSGATE THANET ROAD (north-east side) The Lazarus Hart Havens of Rest (Nos. 1 to 10)

GV II

Alms houses. 1917 to 1922. Red brick, timber frame and plain tiled roof. Two pedimented Dutch gabled brick with diaper blocks to centre, with timber framed 2 storey sections between and flanking, and with single storey brick hipped end wings. Tall lozenge set moulded stacks to left and to right. Leaded lights to both floors, 5 bays in all, under eaves on ground floor. Boarded doors in recessed porches left to right, with turned baluster stairs to upper storeys. Name of houses on stone plaques on pedimented blocks. Founded by legacy of Lazarus Hart, Ramsgate's first Jewish mayor; £10,000 for homes to be shared by Jews and Gentiles. (Busson, Ramsgate 81).
