Description
The Gentleman's Toilet at Montefiore Synagogue and Mausoleum is a lavatory block built in the mid- to late-19th century to serve the adjacent synagogue. It is constructed of rendered brick and designed in the Greek Revival style, featuring a roughly square shape with four pilasters on the front and three on the sides. These pilasters support a moulded cornice, which has a slightly recessed upper section topped with a plain blocking course. The rear wall is made of brick and includes a single window opening, although the openings were bricked up at the time of inspection.
The interior is not accessible and has been vandalised, but it is known that the walls are partly made of white-glazed brick. This lavatory block is notable for its unusual design and was built to accommodate the needs of the synagogue, which was designed by David Mocatta for Sir Moses Montefiore between 1831 and 1833. The necessity for such facilities arises from the length of certain Jewish services, such as those during New Year and Yom Kippur. The toilet block is part of a significant group of Jewish buildings, which includes the synagogue and the Montefiore mausoleum.
