Description
The entrance gates with gatepiers located to the northwest of the Montefiore Synagogue were built around 1870. They were likely constructed as the gates to a Jewish theological college established by Sir Moses Montefiore in memory of his wife Judith, who passed away in 1862. The gates are made of cast iron and are partly set on a brick plinth, featuring brick and concrete piers in the High Victorian Gothic style.
The design includes two octagonal cast iron columns, each about eight feet high, adorned with colonnettes, arches, quatrefoil motifs, and finials. The attached gates feature spear railings with dog rails, and there are sections of matching balustrading on low brick walls, although the north side was missing at the time of the survey. The structure concludes with two brown brick piers, also about eight feet tall, topped with pyramidal-headed concrete caps. Although the Jewish theological college no longer exists, the gates remain significant as part of the group that includes the synagogue built by Sir Moses Montefiore and the Mausoleum for Sir Moses and Lady Judith Montefiore.
