RAMSGATE HERESON ROAD Entrance gates with gatepiers to north west of the Montefiore Synagogue

II

Gates with gatepiers. Circa 1870. Probably built as the gates to a Jewish theological college built by Sir Moses Montefiore as a memorial to his wife Judith who had died in 1862. Cast iron, partly on brick plinth with brick and concrete piers, High Victorian Gothic style. Comprises two cast iron octagonal columns about eight feet high with colonnettes, arches, quatrefoil motifs and finials. Attached gates have spear railings with dog rails and there are sections of identical-patterned balustrading on low brick walls, the north side missing at time of survey. It terminates in two brown brick piers about eight feet in height with pyramidal-headed concrete caps. The Jewish theological college no longer exists but the gates group with the synagogue built by Sir Moses Montefiore and the Mausoleum to Sir Moses and Lady Judith Montefiore.
