Description
No. 14 is a terrace house that has been converted into a guest house. It was built between 1798 and 1801 and underwent alterations in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of rendered and painted brick and features a slate roof. It has four storeys, including a basement, with a horizontally rusticated ground floor and a parapet at the roof, which has a stack located at the rear center.
The second and third floors have two 20th-century louvred windows, while the first floor boasts two full-height sash windows. This level also features a verandah with a corrugated plastic roof, adorned with ornate ironwork, including panelled piers, valancing, scrolls, and a scrolled and bifurcated balustrade supported by iron brackets. On the ground floor, there is a plate glass window and a glazed door to the right, topped with a semi-circular fanlight set in a keyed and vermiculated surround above a flight of four steps. The basement has a louvred light and a half-glazed outer door. The spearhead railings are painted bright yellow.
Notably, Wilkie Collins wrote his best-selling novel "The Woman in White" here in 1881.
