Description

This is a milestone located on the west side of Ashford Road in Sheldwich, dating from the mid-18th century. It is made of stone and stands about 1½ feet high. The milestone has an attached metal plate that is embossed with the distances to Faversham, stating "FEVERSHAM 2 ASHFORD 11." The Faversham, Hythe and Canterbury Turnpike was licensed in 1762, and the old spelling of "FEVERSHAM" suggests that this milestone was likely erected shortly after that date. It is situated within 3 feet of the toll gate lodge.
