Description
Halke Cottages is a house that has been converted into two cottages, dating from the 15th century. It features a timber frame with some exposed sections, painted brick infill, and parts that are weatherboarded, while the right side is clad with painted brick. The roof is plain tiled. The building originally functioned as a hall house with a separately roofed parlour and service wings. It has two storeyed wings on either side of a central range that is one storey with an attic. The end wings were originally jettied but have since been underbuilt. The roofs are hipped and return on the wings, with gablets. There is one gabled dormer, a cluster of stacks to the centre left, and a projecting and offset stack at the end right. The windows have irregular wooden casements. The left side features a rib and stud door, while the right has a boarded door. The rear, which is the original entrance front, is obscured by outshots but reveals a jetty and dragon posts. Inside, the right wing has ogee bracing in the hall range and two four-centred arched doorways leading to the hall range, along with crown post roofs. The house is described as 'early' and 'rare'.
