Description
Tonge Mill is a mill and mill house built in 1837 and 1866. It features yellow stock brick and slate roofs, arranged in a convex curving range of four buildings along the roadside. On the left, there is a two-storey hipped block that includes a loft door and a glazing bar sash window on the first floor, along with two blocked windows on the ground floor. In the center is the mill house, which stands three storeys tall on a plinth with pilaster strip quoins and a parapet. It has two glazing bar sashes on the second floor, one on the first floor with a loft door, and two on the ground floor, which also features a central boarded door in a semi-circular headed surround, topped by a plaque inscribed: T D 1837. To the right, there is a two-storey section with a sloping roof, containing one glazing bar casement and a boarded door in large semi-circular headed surrounds on the ground floor, accompanied by a plaque inscribed: B + S 1866. Adjacent to this is a similar block that has no openings and a chimney, approximately 100 feet tall, with a square section that tapers and has an oversailing cornice cap.
