Description
Number 1, School Lane is a cottage, possibly originally a toll cottage, dating from around 1830 to 1840. It is designed in the 'Gothick' style and features pebbledashed brick with a hipped tiled roof and a central square cemented stack. The building has a wide eaves cornice and is one storey high with two windows.
The main elevation facing School Lane includes pilasters, a plinth, and two ogee-headed windows with marginal glazed casements. The central doorcase is cambered and has two full-height round-headed panels, along with an elaborate Gothick doorknocker. The elevation facing Fox Hill also has pilasters, a plinth, and two intact ogee-headed windows. The south elevation features two ogee-headed windows, one of which is boarded over while the other has only its upper part intact at the time of the survey. The west elevation has one blocked ogee-headed window and a small 20th-century flat-roofed extension built with matching materials.
Attached to the northwest by a stock brick wall is an original square stock brick one-storey outhouse with a hipped roof. The interior of the cottage retains original joinery, including a plank cupboard and a wooden mantelpiece in the northeast room, a cupboard in the southeast room, and at least three four-panelled doors.
