Description

This is a warehouse built in the early 19th century, constructed in two phases. It has a timber frame and is weather boarded, topped with a corrugated iron roof. The main block is two storeys high, sitting on a plinth with curbing stones at the corners. There are two boarded loft doors, one on the left and one on the right, the latter featuring a hoist beam that projects over the building. The ground floor has three boarded doors and a section of bricked wall to the right that includes a casement window. There is a lower single-storey extension to the left, which is recessed and has a small lean-to and fenced compound. This extension also features a shuttered window on the right side and boarded doors on each floor facing the quayside at the rear. The main block's quayside elevation has window openings on the first floor and a single boarded door on the ground floor, with the weather boarding likely hiding other openings. Inside, the construction is entirely timber, with timber posts supporting massive main beams, and some iron posts added for extra support for milling machinery. This warehouse is part of an important group of 18th and early 19th-century warehouses, as indicated on the 1841 Tithe Map, and it is associated with the Grade II* Provender Mill.
