Description

Manor House is a Grade II* listed building located in Hernhill, dating from the 15th century and early 19th century. It features a timber frame, with some parts exposed and others clad in painted brick, and has been extended with structural red brick, some of which is also painted. The roof is a combination of plain tiles and slates.

The house is designed as a hall house with a jettied cross-wing and a 19th-century wing added to the lower end of the hall. The central hall range has one storey and an attic, topped with a hipped roof. To the left, there is a two-storey wing with a return hipped wing that features a returned jetty supported by a dragon post, while to the right, a two-storey wing has battlements. The building includes a hipped dormer at the center and chimney stacks at the left end and center right.

The windows are irregularly arranged, featuring five Gothick windows. There is a boarded door on the left return. On the right return, the two-storey section with battlements has a more regular fenestration, consisting of two three-light Gothick traceried metal casements with gauged basket arched heads on the first floor, alongside a central two-light traceried metal casement with a gauged ogee surround. The ground floor has two three-light casements with gauged basket arches. The entrance features a central panelled door with a fanlight in an ogee-headed surround.

Inside, the frame is visible. The Gothick metal casements are made of iron on the outside and bronze or brass on the inside. This part of the building serves as the village club, which was founded by the Dawes family of Mount Ephraim and is one of the earliest clubs in the country.
