Description
Mount Ephraim is a house built in 1695, which was rebuilt in 1878 and extended in 1913 for the Dawes family. It features a red brick exterior and a slate roof. The building has an irregular plan with a rectangular main block and service wings to the right and rear right. It stands two storeys high on a plinth with a cornice and parapet, showcasing a projecting window bay to the left and a recessed wing to the right. The hipped roof has several stacks arranged from left to right, and there is a central leaded cupola.
The house has sash windows in stone surrounds, arranged in a pattern of 1:5:5 on the first floor and 1:3:5 on the ground floor. The entrance features double doors with three raised and fielded panels, topped by a rectangular fanlight. A heavy cornice and parapet supported by fluted Doric columns and pilasters lead up to a flight of six steps. The roof parapet is raised over the porch, adorned with swags. The left and right returns are based on brick terraces, approximately three feet high on the left and up to eight feet high on the right, with stone steps and a balustrade.
Inside, the cellars from the earliest building remain, while most of the interior features date from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The main rooms have heavily plastered friezes and cornices, along with marble fireplaces. The staircase hall includes marble Ionic columns and pilasters, elliptical arches, panelling, egg and tongue cornices, and a staircase with a half-landing and guilloche pattern cast iron balusters. The first-floor gallery has a marble balustrade and Corinthian columns set in antis on two sides. The early 20th-century service wings have tiled interiors.
