Description

44 and 45 Court Street are two separate buildings sharing a similar ground floor appearance. Number 44 dates from the late 19th century and is three storeys high, originally with three bays and a lower, three-storey, one-bay extension to the left. It is stuccoed and features a moulded cornice supported by brackets, with a parapet above. The second-floor windows have segmental heads with pilastered architraves and keystones. Ground-floor windows are set in reveals behind panelled pilasters with foliated capitals and rectangular pediments. A moulded band runs above the ground floor in both numbers 44 and 45. Number 45 is an 18th-century building, altered in the early 19th century. It is three storeys high, with three windows, and is faced in painted brick with a wooden eaves cornice and a tiled roof. Glazing bars are intact above the first floor. Both buildings have 19th-century bank fronts with modern alterations, including segmental-headed openings. The original doorway in number 45 has been removed. A passageway runs through the ground floor at the north end of number 44. The buildings are part of a group that also includes Nos 39, 39A and 40, Nos 41 to 48 (consecutive), and Nos 8 and 10 Market Place.
