Description
The Stable Yard, built in 1786 by Sir John Soane, is a group of stables that have been converted into flats. The building is made of red brick with a slated roof and is arranged around a square courtyard. It features single-storey ranges that sit on a plinth, with a plat band and box eaves. The windows are recessed semi-circular glazing bar sashes, and there are half-glazed doors.
The entrance block is two storeys high, featuring a central carriage arch and a clock tower above. The first floor has glazing bar sashes, while the ground floor has tripartite semi-circular headed glazing bar sashes. Opposite the entrance block is a carriage house that is one and a half storeys tall, with a central carriage opening set in an elliptical arched recess and large semi-circular glazing bar sashes.
The design is unified by a continuous painted plat band and cornice, recessed windows and doors, and small first storey sashes, all contributing to a geometrically based aesthetic.
