Description

The Lodge and Gateway to Hall Place is a mid-19th century building designed by George Devey. It features two storeys and an attic, with two windows, and the left bay projects at an angle. The high-pitched roof is covered with graduated slates, and the gable ends are stone-coped with quasi-crockets and large kneelers supporting the gabled coping. There are two tall, battlemented chimneys, one made of stone and the other of stone-quoined brick. The eaves cornice is stone coved, and the walls are constructed of red brick with a large diaper pattern of blue headers, complemented by stone quoins and window dressings.

The windows include two and three-light casements, with Tudor heads on the upper ones and transoms on the lower. The glazing is decorative, and stone hoodmoulds are present above the windows. The left windows are set in a canted bay that rises to form a balcony for the attic window, while a screen wall to the right has a raised central part. False stone battlements feature carved symbols. The large double gate beneath is made of wood with cusped tracery and is flanked by fleur-de-Lys headed wrought-iron posts, all set within Tudor arches that have carved spandrels. A similar small single gate is located to the left.

The Lodge and Gateway to Hall Place, along with the wall and Lych Gate to the Church and the Church of St Mary, form a cohesive group.
