Description

This is a range of buildings dated 1886, designed by George and Peto. It forms an L-shaped layout on The Green in Leigh. Number 7 includes an upstairs flat accessed by an external, covered wooden staircase at the right-hand end. The buildings have high-pitched, gable-ended roofs covered in tiles. They are constructed in a Tudor style.

A prominent feature is the ornamental, projecting gable with wood shingles, pierced bargeboards, and a five-light oriel on the inner return of the left-hand range. The left wing is built of coursed freestone and has a double-overhung gable, partially half-timbered with plaster filling. The right wing, fronting the road, has two wide gables across its width, also half-timbered with plaster filling. A brick ground floor is present, both around the angle beneath the shingled gable and in the right wing. The windows are irregular, many-mullioned casements, some flat and some in bays. Tudor arches feature over the doorways, some constructed from stone and others from carved wood. A tall, ornamental chimney is built of brick and stone. The left return is tile hung.

Numbers 1 to 7, together with The Forge and Forge House, form a group.
