Description

Whistler’s Farmhouse is likely a 15th-century hall house. A service wing was demolished in the late 16th century, and a cross-wing was built, alongside the insertion of a chimney, at that time. The roofs are purlin and windbrace construction, featuring reused, smoke-blackened timbers. The front elevation shows a gabled cross-wing to the left, comprising two storeys and an attic, with a single window. To the right is a two-storey section with five windows, representing the older part of the house. A compound ridge stack is present. The tiled roof of the cross-wing has a very high pitch. The first floor is tile-hung, while the ground floor is brick. Modern casement windows are fitted. Later 17th and modern rear additions have been made. The interior reveals extensive exposed timber framing and an altered inglenook fireplace. Two Jacobean fireplaces are located within the cross-wing.
