Description

Chantry House, dating to circa 1700, is a symmetrical building with a main five-window facade and projecting wings on either side, connected by a low screen wall that encloses a paved courtyard with a central wrought iron gate. The red brick elevation has flat lintel arches over windows with rubbed red brick headers. Continuous stucco bands are present above the ground floor and second floor windows. A painted wooden moulded cornice with modillions runs along the top of the building. A random stone plinth is visible at the base. Stucco bands and a modillioned cornice are continued around the front and sides of the projecting wings. Painted wooden mullioned and transomed windows with square-paned leaded casements are fitted throughout. Small rectangular recessed brick panels are situated above the stucco band on the first floor, with one missing above the centre first floor window. The ground floor features a centrally positioned panelled door with a fanlight, set within a slightly projecting stucco surround with a moulded cornice. The fanlight features tracery within a raised flat segmental arch, contained within a recessed round-headed arched panel. First floor windows feature sunblind cases. The hipped tiled roof includes three flat-roofed dormers, each containing a casement. The supporting wings have corresponding one-window facades and hipped tiled roofs. Recessed brick panels are visible on the ground floor and window above. The side elevations of the supporting wings face inwards towards the courtyard, with a window on the ground floor and a recessed brick panel on the first floor. Small, flush, oval brick panels with rubbed red headers are set into larger recessed brick panels on the first floor of the supporting wings. 18th-century lead rainwater pipes are located in the corners of the courtyard. A low brick screen wall with a stone coping borders the front of the courtyard. Brick gate piers, featuring two stone bands and projecting moulded stone copings surmounted by ornamental stone balls, stand at the centre, accompanied by ornamental carved stone brackets to the right and left. Modern ornamental wrought iron gates complete the entrance.
