Description

Gainsford House is a former stable building, originally belonging to the Crown Inn, and now a private house. It likely incorporates a 16th or 17th century timber-framed structure, although the current external appearance is later. The building stands at a corner and is set at right angles to the Crown Inn, connected by a covered way over a yard entrance. This connecting link features tile hanging on the first floor and a leaded casement window. It has lead coping to the parapet, a concealed gutter, and a tile roof. An open yard entrance below has an ornamental cast iron gate and corner brackets.

The east elevation, facing the Square, is two storeys high and features painted brickwork with tile hanging above. It has lead coping to the parapet, a concealed gutter, a tiled roof, and a ½ hipped end ridge chimney stack on the south side. Modern, square-paned, leaded casement windows are set in oak frames. The south elevation is two storeys high with a gable end, including a small attic window. A projecting ground floor is constructed of painted weatherboarding with a continuous tiled hood. The first floor is tile-hung with corner fillets, and the gable end is also tile-hung. A 18th century panelled door is located in the corner, with a small light window above, and tile hanging above. The north elevation, facing the garden, is of painted brick and weatherboarding above, with a tile roof and gable end, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, and showing signs of modern restoration.

The stable buildings of the Crown Inn and Gainsford House together with No 2 High Street form a group of buildings with group value.
