Description

The Bee House in the Walled Garden, dating from around 1850, is a small weatherboarded building designed in the Gothic style, topped with a hipped slate roof. On the northwest side, there is a central pointed arched door approximately 5 feet high, made of planks. This side also features two pointed arched window openings that are unglazed, with sliding wooden shutters behind them. The ends of the building have similar windows.

Inside, the structure has a roof supported by a ridge piece, collar beam, and end diagonal tension braces. The floor is tiled, and there is a shelf running along three sides of the interior, about 1 foot above the ground, where the hives were placed. On the southeast side, there is a board that can be raised from the outside to allow bees to enter and exit their hives. This building is considered an extremely rare survival.
