Bee House in Walled Garden

TQ 45 NE 41/2003 II*(star) GV

Bee house. c1850. Small weatherboarded building in Gothic style with hipped slate roof. North west side has central pointed arched door about 5 feet high with plank door. 2 pointed arched window openings, unglazed, with sliding wooden shutters behind. Ends have similar windows. Interior has roof with ridge piece and collar beam and end diagonal tension braces. Tiled floor. Shelf on 3 sides about 1 foot from ground on which the hives were placed. The south east side has one board which could be raised from the outside to permit the bees to enter and leave their hives. An extremely rare survival.
