Description
Donnington Manor Hotel, formerly known as Emma Hotel, is a house that has been converted into a hotel. It has its origins in the 15th century, with an adjoining lobby entry wing that dates from the late 16th or 17th century. The building was later converted into cottages before being combined into one structure, which was remodeled and extended in 1936-37. The southeast wing was further extended after 1968.
The front elevation features tile hanging above and brick below, with the tile hanging continuing into the northwest return. Since 1937, the building has had a timber-framed and plastered appearance, incorporating studs that were added during that time. The roof is made of plain tiles, with a half-hipped end on the northwest side and gables on both the 15th-century cross-wing and the post-1968 wing.
In the center of the building, there is a two-storey gable-ended porch wing in front of the former lobby entry, which includes an oak studded door. On the ground floor, there are two modern oriel bay windows with hipped tile roofs, and one of these windows is also present on the first floor in the 15th-century wing, as well as in the porch wing and at the first floor in the northwest return. The building features various lead panel casements from 1936-37 and two small tiled dormers added during the same period.
The 15th-century wing may have originally had a jettied design and still retains a moulded truss at the first floor level. Overall, the building has undergone significant restoration but remains largely an old structure. There are large, later 20th-century additions at the rear, which face the car park.
