Description
Middle House, Morants Court is a large house of differing periods, now divided into maisonnettes. It was once the residence of Sir Edward Meyerstein, a philanthropist. The oldest part, likely dating from the early 15th century, is a first-floor hall which was reputedly used for Court Leets. This section comprises three bays with two crown posts, featuring very heavy rafters of even width, ogee braces to plates and beams, and an old plank floor. The external appearance of this original section has been significantly altered. It presents as two storeys and an attic with two windows. The roof is now slated, incorporating an eaves soffit and a modern dormer. The front wall has been raised to reduce the roof pitch. The first-floor level is tile hung, retaining a jetty above a brick ground floor. The windows are a mix of C18 casements, modern casements, and one three-light sash window; a modern double door serves the entrance. A two-storey, three-window kitchen wing, dating from approximately 1700, features a high-pitched tiled roof and a first-floor band. Later stucco quoins are present, along with dressings to late 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars. The remainder of the house dates to the 19th century and is modern. For historical context, see Hasted's History of Kent.
