Description
Moreton Almshouses, built in 1874, is a U-shaped building designed in a romantic, neo-Tudor style. It features one and a half storeys with a total of 13 windows on the upper floor and 15 on the ground floor. The ground floor is constructed of snecked freestone with a plinth, while the upper walls are adorned with various gabled and hipped dormers that break the eaves. A large, projecting, timber-framed central gable has incised plaster filling, and there is similar detailing on an oriel dormer to the left and two other dormers. To the left of the central gable, a large red brick chimney stack has three diagonal shafts, and there is a plaque at its base with a Latin inscription dedicated to Holy Trinity. The building features several plank doors with long iron hinges set under 2-centred arches, some of which are blocked. The windows are primarily 1- to 5-light wood casements with glazing bars, except for a 4-light stone mullioned window with 4-centred heads to the lights at the centre of the ground floor. To the left, there is a set-back door beneath an overhanging first floor supported on a stone pier. A date plaque is located on the south end wall.
