Description

The garden gateway, located about 20 metres east of East Hall in Boughton Monchelsea, dates to 1604, although it may be older. It is constructed of stone and features roughly-coursed stone walls on either side. The gateway includes a moulded, four-centred stone doorway with a ribbed door, accessed by three stone steps. Above the doorway, there is a shallow off-set. The design includes a plain ashlar frieze and a triangular stone-coped gable, which is topped with short octagonal finials at each end. The date "1604" is carved near the apex of the gable. The flanking walls rise up to the gateway and extend approximately 20 feet to both the right and left.
