Description
Steppes Hill Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with earlier elements and 18th-century additions, which was restored in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed, with the ground floor pebble-dashed and the first floor featuring applied studding, while the right gable end is tile-hung. It has a lobby entry plan consisting of three timber-framed bays and a stack bay, along with a rear stair turret. The farmhouse is two storeys high, set on a brick plinth, and has a continuous jetty that extends around the left gable end. The exterior showcases applied close-studding with arch braces, and the roof is hipped to the left and half-hipped to the right. There is a multiple stack on the front slope of the roof, positioned off-centre to the left, and a projecting brick stack on the right. A panelled door is located beneath the stack, sheltered by a simple canopy. The timber-framed stair turret behind the stack is clad in brick. To the left, there is a rear wing that has a core from the 17th century or earlier, which is timber-framed with a plain tile roof and was brick-clad in the 18th century, featuring a plat band. The roof of this wing is half-hipped at the junction with the front range. There is also a much lower 18th-century extension to the wing, which is timber-framed and clad in brick, along with a large 20th-century extension to the left. Inside, the front range has a clasped purlin roof with reducing principal rafters, which have been altered at both ends. The left end bay of the front range includes a fragment of a cross-wing from an earlier building. The rear wing features an ovolo-moulded mullion window with secondary diamond mullions, along with exposed beams and posts. The farmhouse is marked on the Ordnance Survey map as Hill Farm.
