Description
The Old Forge is a house dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. It is timber framed with painted brick infilling and a plain tile roof. The 15th-century section features a two-bay open hall with a single-storey end to the right, and one bay of the hall may have been converted to a smoke bay slightly later. To the left is a 16th-century cross-wing that projects to the front of the house. This wing has two storeys, with widely spaced studding and arch braces. It jetties over the street, and both the jetty and front bay were restored in the 20th century. The roof is hipped at the right end and gabled to the street, with a hipped rear. There is a brick ridge stack towards the right end and an irregular arrangement of three-light leaded casements. A door beneath the stack has a plain-tiled canopy over it. To the right, there is a later lean-to with a flint ground floor, and a 20th-century rear extension to the wing. Inside, the house features exposed beams, posts, and joists, with a sans-purlin roof in the 15th-century part.
