Description

The table tomb to the Charles family, dating from the early 19th century, is located approximately one yard north of the monument to the Best family in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary and All Saints. It features a stone on a stone base with a moulded plinth and a corniced lid. The long sides of the tomb have side panels with vertical stepped recesses on either side of vertical raised fluting that tapers towards the bottom, adorned with an acanthus leaf at the base and a lunette at the top. The central panels are recessed, and the inscribed area is surrounded by a channel cut diagonally across the corners, with fluted rays in each corner beyond the diagonals. The ends have plain side panels with a stepped central recess, and recessed central panels with a shouldered channel around the inscribed areas. The south side commemorates William Charles, a surgeon from Maidstone, who died in 1832, and his wife Mary, who died in 1821. The east end is dedicated to their son William Charles, who died in 1810. The north side remembers three children who died in 1799, 1819, and 1821, while the west end is blank.
