Description

This building is a barn, originally an oast-house, located about 25 metres south of Little Pagehurst. It has origins in the 17th century, with later alterations and a late 19th-century kiln. The barn is timber-framed and weatherboarded, while the kiln is constructed of red and grey brick in Flemish bond. The outbuilding features brick on the ground floor and is weatherboarded above, all topped with plain tile roofs.

The barn consists of two timber-framed bays, with the right bay being very narrow. A square kiln has been added to the right end, and there is an outbuilding attached to the right of the kiln, which has a gabled front. The barn roof is hipped to the left, and the kiln has a pyramidal roof with a cowl. A rendered porch with a hipped plain tile roof leads to the narrow right bay of the barn, featuring inner double doors and an arch-braced outer opening. There is one small casement window in the kiln and another in the gable end of the outbuilding, along with a ribbed door on the ground floor of the outbuilding. Lean-tos are present at the rear, left gable end, and front of the barn.

The interior has only been partly inspected, but it includes gunstock-jowled posts and arch-braced tie-beams. The 19th-century clasped purlin roof reuses 17th-century rafters, and there are threshing-floor braces on the left side of the midstrey. Part of the former barn wall features staves and lath-and-plaster infilling above the midrail. This building is included for its group value.
