Description
Thorn Farmhouse is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century and features a lobby entrance. The building was refronted in the mid-19th century, with a crosswing added to the right side in 1911. It is timber framed, with a stucco front and tile hanging on the painted brick ground floor at the sides and rear. The roof is covered with peg tiles and has two brick chimneystacks.
The front of the original wing is two storeys high with three windows, primarily featuring 16-pane sash windows, except for a central 12-pane window, all with cambered heads and horns. There is a roughcast and tiled central porch from 1911. The central brick chimneystack has been recapped around 1911.
The rear elevation includes two gables, with the left side being longer and featuring a gabled infill block, likely from the 18th century, positioned between the two gables. The fenestration is irregular, with some mid-19th century sashes and early 20th century three-light casements. The right gable attic has a wooden loading door and a hoist arm. There is a lean-to extension on the right side. The left side of the building has bricks inscribed with "E DAY 1911" and other bricks marked "A DAY", "W DAY", and "J DAY".
Inside, both the ground and first floors have cross beams with chamfered or unchamfered floor joists, open fireplaces, and a late 18th century six-panelled door. The roof structure includes through purlins with a collar beam and diagonal tension braces, and the rafters are pegged without a ridgepiece. The floorboards date from the late 16th or early 17th century, and there is a three-plank door with a wooden hatch and pintle hinges.
