Description

3/161 Oasthouse about 10 metres west of Henhurst Farmhouse

Barn, now oast house. C18 or earlier, with C19 kiln. Barn or stowage timber framed, weatherboarded. Kiln red and grey brick in Flemish bond. Plain tile roofs. Barn of three timber-framed bays aligned east- west, with lean-tos to north and south sides. Circular kiln added to west end of north side, breaking into lean-to. Barn 2-storeys, on brick plinth, with half-hipped roof. East gable end has stable door to ground floor, first-floor loading door up external flight of wooden steps, and 2-light upper casement. Kiln has cogged brick eaves cornice, conical roof with cowl, and boarded door to north side. Interior: only partly inspected. 2 cross-beams with staggered axial beams to ground floor of barn. Wall between barn and north lean-to weatherboarded below midrail, with tension braces staves and lath and plaster infilling above. Boarded door to kiln from north lean-to.
