Description

This building is an oast house located about 10 metres west of Henhurst Farmhouse. It dates from the 18th century or earlier, with a kiln added in the 19th century. Originally a barn or storage building, it is timber framed and weatherboarded, while the kiln is constructed of red and grey brick in Flemish bond. The roofs are covered with plain tiles.

The barn consists of three timber-framed bays running east to west, with lean-tos on both the north and south sides. A circular kiln has been added to the west end of the north side, which extends into the lean-to. The barn is two storeys high, built on a brick plinth, and features a half-hipped roof. The east gable end includes a stable door on the ground floor, a first-floor loading door accessed by an external flight of wooden steps, and a 2-light upper casement window.

The kiln features a cogged brick eaves cornice, a conical roof with a cowl, and a boarded door on the north side. The interior has only been partially inspected, but it includes two cross-beams with staggered axial beams on the ground floor of the barn. The wall separating the barn from the north lean-to is weatherboarded below the midrail, with tension braces and lath and plaster infilling above. There is a boarded door leading to the kiln from the north lean-to.
