Description

The former oasthouse, located about 20 metres north of Belks, is a maltings building dating from the early 18th century, with some 19th-century alterations. The front features 19th-century red and grey brick in Flemish bond, set on a roughly-coursed ragstone base. The rear is constructed of stone on the ground floor, with weatherboarding above, and it has a plain tile roof. The kiln is made of red and grey brick in English bond, topped with a corrugated iron roof. The building is L-shaped, comprising a main range with eight short timber-framed bays on the first floor and an integral wing that has been truncated and runs forward from the right end. The oasthouse was converted in the late 19th century and features an unusually large circular kiln, which is now truncated above the eaves, located towards the centre of the front wall. The structure has two storeys, with a boarded hatch on the front of the first floor and two hatches (formerly three) at the rear. The roof is hipped, with the left hip returning to the front along the wing, and there is a gable at the truncation. A cogged brick eaves cornice is present on the kiln. The left gable end of the main range has garage doors, with a first-floor door above. The walls of the wing extend towards the road, functioning as garden walls, and show remnants of brick kilns. Inside, there are sliding shutters for the rear hatches, with cross beams and staggered axial beams on the ground floor. The roof features slightly staggered butt purlins, high collars, and raked queen struts supporting the rafters.
