Description
This is an 18th-century oast house, with 19th-century alterations, located approximately 6.5 yards northeast of Fairbourne Mill in Harrietsham. The building is timber framed and weatherboarded, resting on a red brick plinth, and features a plain tile roof. It has an L-shaped plan with the kiln area extending forward to the right, and both sections of the roof are half-hipped.
There are double doors of single-storey height at the left end of the stowage and at the gable end of the kiln section. A small boarded door is positioned above the tie-beam of the kiln section. Inside, the oast retains exposed timbers and remnants of plaster work on the walls and rafters of the first floor in the kiln area. There are double doors connecting the kiln and stowage on the first floor, but there are no clear bay divisions in the kiln area, and the floor is missing there. The roof was likely altered in the 19th century, featuring a ridge-piece, with two pairs of principal rafters trenched for large pegged collars just above the wall-plate and side purlins. This building is included for its group value.
