Description
No. 27, also known as Bell Cottage, is a house located on Bell Lane in Staplehurst. It was originally built as cottages in the late 17th century or 18th century and has undergone some alterations in the 19th century. The structure is timber framed and weatherboarded, with the first floor of the right gable end being tile-hung. It features a plain tile roof and consists of three timber-framed bays, including a central stack bay, and is positioned at right angles to the road. The building has two storeys and a garret, with a half-hipped roof and a brick ridge stack located towards the centre. The fenestration is irregular, comprising three leaded casements: two are three-light and one is a central two-light. There is a ribbed door situated towards the right end of the rear lean-to. Inside, the cottage showcases exposed framing, bevelled cross-beams and joists, plain brick fireplaces with chamfered bressumers, and a staggered butt purlin roof with high collars.
