Description

This is a house, originally a barn, located in Headcorn, dating to the early 15th century with alterations made in the 1980s. The building is timber-framed with a ground floor of red brick in Flemish bond. The upper floor has exposed timber framing and rendered infilling. It has a plain tile roof and is of a Wealden four-bay design. The front wall of the hall bays was moved outwards at a later date, and the jetties of the end bays were underbuilt to create a flush facade. The building stands two storeys high on a brick plinth with broadly spaced timber studs and tension braces to the end bays. A diagonal cross of two curved braces is visible in the left hall bay. The roof is hipped and of 20th-century design. There are a rear stack to the left and a ridge stack towards the right end. The windows are 20th-century diamond mullioned casements; the front features an irregular fenestration of four of these windows. A 20th-century ribbed door is located within a 15th-century doorway on the left end of the hall, and another 20th-century ribbed door is on the right end of the right hall bay. A lean-to is attached to the left-hand side. The interior has not been inspected. The building holds group value as an early example of a timber-framed structure, significantly altered in the later 20th century.
