Description
This building, located at 25, 25A, and 25B Gabriel's Hill in Maidstone, is a late 16th-century timber-framed structure that has been refaced in the early to mid-19th century. The exterior is clad in stucco with incised lines designed to imitate masonry. It features an old tiled roof with a parapet and a wooden cornice. The building has three storeys and two windows. The second floor has 20th-century casements, while the first floor showcases mullioned and transomed casements. The ground floor is occupied by 20th-century shop fronts.
At the rear, the original gable on the right side is obscured by a later addition, likely from the 19th century, which also has a gable. Inside, the building retains a late 16th-century roof, with one side mostly keeping its original rafters, while the other side has been largely renewed in softwood. There are two chamfered tie beams with lambs tongue steps. The interior has been modernized with false ceilings, and some broad beams may conceal earlier boxed-in beams. The top of the wall plate is visible in the roof, while the rest of the wall frame is likely embedded within the wall.
