Description
The Former Ship Inn is an inn located at No 33, Gabriels Hill in Maidstone. It features an early to mid-19th century façade that was added to an earlier building. The exterior is made of yellow brick with a Flemish bond pattern, and it has an old plain tile roof that is gabled on the left and hipped on the right, with brick stacks at the ridge and left end. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall, with eight windows across the front. The central section is highlighted by a rounded bay that connects a recessed four-window range on the right to another four-window range on the left. There are blocked doorways on the left and center, framed by moulded wood architraves, and a double-entry on the right. The sash windows, which are boarded over at the time of the survey, have keyed flat stone arches above them. A raised stone band runs along the storey, topped by a raised stone cornice beneath a stone-coped parapet. While an interior inspection was not possible, it is likely to be of interest. The building is included for its group value.
