Description

Knowle Hill House is a farmhouse, likely dating from 1736, although it may incorporate an earlier structure. The rear wing is timber-framed with coursed galletted stone to the ground floor and tile hanging to the first floor. The front range is constructed of yellowish brick with red brick dressings in a Flemish bond pattern. It has a plain tile roof. The farmhouse comprises a timber-framed range running parallel to the road, facing east, with a 1736 block set at a right angle to the south.

The 18th-century range is two storeys and attics, built on a brick plinth. It features plat bands above the ground and first floors, interrupted by four plain, full-height brick pilasters that extend to the top of a low, plain parapet. The roof is hipped, with one hip returning. There is a slightly projecting gable and chimney stacks. Two flat-roofed dormers are present. The front elevation has a regular three-window arrangement of segmental-headed 12-pane sash windows. Voussoirs to the outer windows are splayed, and to the central window are elliptical. Segmental-headed windows are also present on the ground floor. The central door consists of three fielded panels and leads up three steps, beneath a shallow cut brick "hood." Above the central, first-floor window is a datestone inscribed “SB over 17 36”. The rear return wing to the right has a gable end stack and two broadly-spaced 12-pane sash windows. The interior was not inspected.
