Description

Upper Otterpool is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with later alterations. It is timber framed, featuring a front elevation of small blocks of roughly coursed stone with brick dressings. The ground floor of the wing is made of uncoursed stone, while the first floor is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond. The rear elevation of the main range and the first floor of the wing are in red brick laid in English bond. The building has a plain tile roof and consists of a main range with three timber-framed bays and an entrance passage, along with a two-bay cross-wing that slightly projects to the rear on the right. It stands two storeys high and has a stone plinth at the base of the main range. The roof is hipped, with the right hip returning, and there is a brick stack towards the top of the left hip, as well as a multiple brick ridge stack at the junction of the main range and the wing. The fenestration is irregular, with five windows; one is a late 20th-century six-pane fixed light at the left end, and four are 16-pane sashes, including one in an altered opening in the wing. The ground-floor windows have segmental heads, and there is one in a blocked doorway beneath the stack. A small chamfered rectangular stone window is located at the rear of the wing, and there is a late 20th-century door to the left of centre. To the left, there is a two-storey red brick lean-to. Inside, the farmhouse features moulded ground-floor beams, three moulded wooden doorways in the entrance passage that may have been re-set, a moulded brick fireplace at the left end of the first floor, a small amount of 17th-century panelling on the first floor, and a covered wall painting.
