Description

The National Westminster Bank, located at No. 3 High Street, was built in 1909 and designed by architect W Campbell Jones. It features a florid Edwardian Neo-Baroque style and stands three storeys tall. The ground floor is made of rusticated Portland stone, topped by a slate roof with a stone balustraded parapet. A central curved open pediment with a round window is a prominent feature, along with an elaborate cornice supported by brackets. The building has ten engaged columns on the second and third floors, with eight of these coupled and featuring modified Ionic capitals. There are three windows in total, with the three central windows being three-light sashes. A swag moulding runs between the windows of the first and second floors. The ground floor includes five round-headed arches, one of which serves as the entrance door, another as a passage, and the remaining three as shopfronts. Nos 1, 3, and 5 to 9 High Street form a group with this building.
